# Errors

> Every error code the GraphQL API returns, and what to do about it.

Errors come back in `errors`, each with a `message` and, where Darpan sets one, `extensions.code`. A query rejected before it runs returns no `data`.

| Code | Meaning | What to do |
| - | - | - |
| `UNAUTHENTICATED` | No API key, or the key is unknown, disabled or expired | Check the key; ask your administrator for a new one |
| `COST_EXCEEDED` | The query costs more than the limit | Ask for fewer fields or a smaller `first` |
| `DEPTH_EXCEEDED` | The query nests objects too deeply | Split it into two queries |
| `FIRST_REQUIRED` | A connection has no `first` or `last` | Add `first:` |
| `FIRST_TOO_LARGE` | `first` or `last` is over the limit | Use 100 or less and page |
| `THROTTLED` | The key's bucket does not hold the query's cost | Wait; it refills at 50 points a second |
| `DEADLINE_EXCEEDED` | The request ran out of time | Ask for less |
| `MALFORMED_QUERY` | A `query:` term is not `key:value` | See [Search syntax](/graphql/search-syntax) |
| `FIELD_NOT_FILTERABLE` | A `query:` key is not accepted | Use a key the query lists |
| `OPERATOR_NOT_ALLOWED` | A comparator is not allowed on that key | Use one the key allows |
| `INVALID_CURSOR` | `after` or `before` is not a cursor Darpan issued | Start again from the first page |
| `BATCH_LIMIT_EXCEEDED` | A field would be looked up for too many records at once | Ask for fewer records |

## Errors from an audit query

`auditReport` and `auditFinding` explain an expected refusal in plain words, for example `Audit month-closing was not found`, `Finding F-1 was not found` (also for another tenant's finding) or `date must be YYYY-MM-DD`. Any other failure reads `auditReport could not be completed`; Darpan logs the detail.

GraphQL syntax and validation errors (an unknown field, a wrong argument type, a mutation) come from the GraphQL layer itself and do not use the codes above.
